COURSE: MUSI 1101 (Chamber Singers I)
DESCRIPTION: Acapella Estate Siena is an NWACC in ITALY auditioned SATB ensemble. The ensemble will rehearse and perform a mixture of a cappella styles ranging from renaissance to spirituals to jazz and pop. The group will rehearse and perform during the month of June in Siena, Italy.
AUDITIONS: singers should submit a Youtube performance of one forgiven language song, accompanied or unaccompanied. Youtube auditions should be sent to milesfish@mac.com.
PERFORMANCES: Three concerts—two in Siena and one in Florence—plus three informal concerts are tentatively scheduled for the summer session.
REQUIREMENTS: Singers enrolled for college credit or audit are required to attend rehearsals, participate in scheduled concerts, assist with the production of the concerts by passing out concert flyers, and generally support the other members of the ensemble.
COURSE PLAN: Singers will be expected to know their parts when they arrive in Siena; music will not be allowed for performances. Selections for the summer will be posted on the NWACC in ITALY website by January 1 along with recordings for the works and youtubes of SATB parts for most works.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: During the course, students will:
1. Demonstrate sightsinging ability .
2. Sing in a range of musical styles
3. Develop diction in English and a variety of foreign languages
4. Work cooperatively with respect for colleagues
5. Contribute toward professional-level concert experiences
TEXT: None.
MUSIC: Many of the music selections are in the public domain. For selections not in the public domain, students will be required to purchase an Acapella Siena music packet from J.W. Pepper (cost about $25)
ATTENDANCE: Attendance at all class meetings is mandatory. There are no exceptions.
EVALUATION AND GRADING: Both are somewhat subjective outside of the stated attendance requirements. In order to achieve an A in the course, a singer must participate as described above in an enthusiastic and capable manner.
Special circumstances may warrant special consideration. If you have a problem, talk to me.

SINGER’S DICTION—ITALIAN / ENGLISH
CREDIT: 1.0 hour credit
Open to college students and adults (you do not have to be a college student to take this course)

1.0 Hour credit
DISCRIPTION: This course focuses on the study of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and its application to Italian and English. Students will learn the basics of singer’s diction and demonstrate their knowledge through speaking examinations
All singers and choral directors must study diction. The purpose of this course is to provide the aspiring singer or choral director with effective knowledge and tools to obtain a basic proficiency in lyric diction.
LEARNING OUTCOMES (NASM Standard):
Upon successful completion of this course the student will:
1. Comprehend the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and its application including an understanding of the phonology of diction, i.e. the subtle changes in the articulators necessary to effect precise pronunciation and artistic communication.
2. Be skilled in the proper singing pronunciation of Italian and English (British and American)
TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIALS: to be provided free though online sources
COURSE FORMAT AND PROCEDURES:
Class activities--
1. The instructor will explain and model the sounds and the students will emulate
2. The instructor will explain the rules of pronunciation of the language being studied and students will write and speak exercises to demonstrate understanding.
3. Students will perform literature and the diction will be coached by the instructor
HOMEWORK:
Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis. Homework will generally be due on the next class period after it is assigned.
TEST AND QUIZZES:
1. Oral tests will be administered. Tests will consist of problems requiring transcription of IPA into language reading text from Italian/Latin arias. Tests will be graded by percentage of correct answers.
2. Oral tests will be administered on an individual basis. Oral tests will be graded on accuracy of pronunciation and rate of flow.
3.Quizzes may be administered on a periodic basis. Quizzes will be graded by percentage of correct answers.
ATTENDANCE: Attendance at all class meetings is mandatory. There are no exceptions.
