IMPORTANT
NOTES for Face-to-Face Classes (printed below in light-blue type)
- I agree with many other music educators who believe that appreciating great music is best achieved listening to great music. Therefore, much of our classroom time will be spent listening to music via classical music videos. I also believe, along with many other music educators, that music listening is most effective when the student is doing only that...only listening. I request that during the listening sessions you refrain from note taking; all the listening selections are posted on our website and on your Blackboard page so I welcome you to re-listen after class and take notes then.
- I request that you consider refraining from note-taking during the lectures. All lectures are posted online with test material highlighted so there is no need to take notes from the lectures. I often talk about music and often these comments are not posted on the webpage. However, only the info posted and highlighted on the webpage will be considered for your test.
- If you feel that note taking during lectures or listening enhances your learning, see me after class and we'll talk about it and make arrangements for what is best for you.
Grading Schedule
- Exams = 50% of your grade
- Writing Projects = 30% of your grade
- Concerts attended = 10% of your grade
- Pop Quizzes = 10%
- There is no final exam
- There are no extra credit options
Attendance
- Attendance counts. After two missed classes your grade may be dropped ONE LETTER GRADE for each additional two classes you miss.
- If you are registered in a Music Appreciation Face-to-Face class and cannot attend class regularly, you should drop this class and register for the online version.
- For classes that meet once each week: one missed class counts as two absences.
PHONES
- Cell phone use of any kind is not permitted. Put them away, out of sight at the beginning of each class.
DEVICES
- Tablets, pads and laptops are not allowed during lecture or listening. They are often used during group projects; you will be given advance notice when laptops, tablets, pads will be used.
This may not be the right section of Music Appreciation for you. If after reading the above descriptions and notes you feel that this is not right for you, let me know and we'll see about transferring you to another section. Email me or see me after class.
